10 Most Expensive Celebrity Homes
And what would you do with a million dollars? Maybe you’d buy a house. Maybe that house would be bulldozed by the likes of Hugh Hefner and Billy Joel, because what is a million dollars worth to them, really? Probably just breakfast. You know, flying to Paris on a private jet for a warm fresh croissant and a view of the Eiffel Tower glinting in the sun. Just a typical Tuesday morning. Now don’t you feel petty for getting all upset over the imaginary loss of your imaginary measly million dollar home? The cheapest home on our list is ten times that amount. These folks use a million dollars as a doormat on which to wipe their muddy Stuart Weizman’s, so quit crying and start drooling over these lavish mansions.
Arron Spelling
Topping the list is Aaron Spelling’s 56,500 square foot Los Angeles estate, valued at $150 million. Spelling has four garages, three kitchens, three rooms for gift wrapping, a skating rink, an orchard, a bowling alley, a tennis court, a swimming pool, a gym, two turtle doves and a gold-encrusted partridge in a pear tree.
Bill Gates
Second best is Microsoft’s Bill Gates, whose Medina, Washington home is larger than Spelling’s at 66,000 square feet, but slightly cheaper at $147.5 million. (Bill probably only has two gift wrapping rooms, which would account for the difference.) Visitors to the Gates mansion wear a pin that changes temperature, music, and lighting in the home. Bill also has an estate-wide server system, a bowling alley, a library, and a pool.
Oprah Winfrey
Oprah’s $85 million Montecito, California home is 23,000 square feet of fabulous. She has fourteen bathrooms (for when you can’t hold it a second longer), ten fireplaces, six bedrooms, a 600-rose-bush garden, a tea house, a home cinema, and a manmade lake for her exotic fish. (Rumor has it she’s currently installing an annex for seven more bathrooms.)
Hugh Hefner
Original playboy Hugh Hefner’s Playboy Mansion is 21,987 square feet of sexy. Valued at $54 million, Hef has a wine cellar, game room, aviary, zoo (yes, his own zoo), pet cemetery, tennis courts, waterfall, swimming pool, grotto, and an “Elvis Suite,” which we hope is modeled on young Elvis’s life, and not on the older, fried sandwich version we’d all like to forget.
Billy Joel
Musician Billy Joel’s Miami Beach getaway is an excessive 303,310 square feet, worth $35 million. One of his bathrooms is made with onyx, one in European limestone. A hand-carved fireplace adorns the living room. The Piano Man probably gets lost in here from time to time.
With eleven bedrooms, nine bathrooms, and a 50 foot observation deck, Christie Brinkley’s modest Long Island home is worth just $30 million. A pittance, really. Step it up, Christie; Aaron Spelling probably spent that much on just his swimming pool.
Jerry Seinfeld
What’s the deal with Jerry Seinfeld’s $32 million home in the Hamptons? I mean, it’s got a pool, guesthouse, 22 car garage, and a baseball field: come ooooonnnnn! Beware if you go for a visit on a hot summer day, though. Seinfeld hired the friendly Soup Nazi as his pool guard. “No pool for you!”
Arnold Schwarzenegger
The Governator himself, Arnold Schwarzenegger, is facing the sale of his $23.5 million, 14,500 square foot estate in Brentwood County, California, following his divorce from Maria Shriver. Up for grabs are the ten bathrooms, seven bedrooms, pool, and tennis court. He may be down and out now, but of course, he’ll be back.
Will Smith
This is a story all about how Will Smith’s house has its own zip code. Yeah, its own zip code. We’d like to take a minute — just sit right there, we’ll tell you how he became the Fresh Prince of Calabasas, California: he moved into a $20 million refurbished castle with a lake, basketball courts, tennis courts, and a golf course. He looked at his kingdom, he was finally there, and we’re done carrying this theme song joke any further.
Ozzy Osbourne
Love him or… wonder what the heck he’s saying, Ozzy Osbourne and his family have one sweet house. At $10 million and 10,953 square feet, the Osbournes can yell at each other from a safe distance in any of their six bedrooms, ten bathrooms, or anywhere else on their more than two acre property, including the swimming pool.
How much would it cost to own one of these Celebrity Homes?
Here’s how the monthly mortgage payments for these less-than-frugal celebs stacks up, based on 20% down with a 30 year, 6% fixed-rate loan:
- Bill “Microsoft Works” Gates: $707,469
- Aaron Spelling: $407,694
- Oprah: $407,694
- Hef: $259,005
- The Piano Man: $167,874
- Christie Brinkley: $153,484
- Seinfeld: $143,892
- Ahh-nold: $95,928
- Big Willie Style: $57,077
- Sabbath and Company: $47,964
Some of the celebrities on our list are paying more in monthly mortgage payments than most of us pay for a whole house. Haven’t they heard of sharing the love? At least Bill Gates’ customized temperature and lighting and Oprah’s “any time you feel the urge” fourteen bathrooms are designed for the comfort of visiting friends and family. Jerry Seinfeld can have 21 friends park in his garage. Unless… wait, does he have 22 cars?! Tsk tsk tsk. But how come none of these guys seem to have more than one or two pools? And really, Will, only one golf course? We think the celebrities can do better. We’ll see you this time next year, and someone had better have a $300 million estate to show for it. We’re looking at you, Billy Joel. Think of how many precious stone-themed bathrooms you could buy with that kind of investment.
